Torres: Premier League Is Our Priority

In the wake of last week's Carling Cup exit at hands of Tottenham Hotspur, the Reds came in for some criticism for a lacklustre performance.

After the game, the club's manager Rafa Benitez stated that the League Cup was low on the list of Liverpool's priorities this season; the Spaniard named the Premier League title and the Champions League as the most important rewards on offer for the Reds.

The manager's sentiments have now been echoed by the Anfield side's record signing, Fernando Torres.

After scooping the Northwest Football Awards Player of the Year accolade last night, El NiƱo's thoughts shifted to this top flight campaign.

Liverpool currently sit second in the rankings, separated from Chelsea by only goal difference, and are well placed to mount a championship challenge.

The club has not won an English league title since 1990, a season when Chelsea finished fifth and Manchester United 13th, which illustrates how much the footballing landscape has changed since Liverpool last ruled the domestic roost.

However, Torres believes that the club can challenge for the country's top honour this term.

He told Sky Sports News: "This season has seen us get off to a good start, and that is very much appreciated here.

"If you are still up there by December, then you have serious options of staying there. The big name sides rarely slip up, especially during the first half of the season. If you fall too far behind, you leave yourself very few, if any options.

"The Premier League is the title which everyone wants, even more than the Champions League, especially considering that the club lifted the title three seasons ago.

"The players who have been at the club for longer have won every title possible apart from the Premier League, and the players and also especially the fans want to win it.

"If they had to decide between the two, they choose the Premier League."
